Land Capability Evaluation Based on GIS - A Case of Shenyang City

This paper approaches the methods and the procedures of land capability evaluation based on ARC/INFO GIS and other software. According to the regional characteristics of Shenyang, I selected slope, land use, soil erosion, danger etc. thirteen elements as the factors of land evaluation, then I present efforts for building and using step regression analysis model and empirical index sum model for land capability evaluation. By use of statistic analysis for data, eight classes of land are divided. It is born out that the first model is better than the second one by comparing output maps of evaluation. Land suitability evaluation is also done after finishing land capability evaluation. Furthermore, I discuss the internal relations between them. The methods supported by ARC/INFO GIS etc. are considered to be more timely, economical, and rapid in use than conventional. They also cut down on quantities of manpower and material resources.
