People urged to utilise solar energy

BIJAPUR, JAN. 30. D. Shivakumar, regional manager of Syndicate Bank, Bijapur, said on Friday that the power crisis could be eased to an extent if people tapped solar energy. Participating in the United Nations-sponsored non-conventional energy programme at Honaganahalli near here, he said banks and other financial institutions offered assistance to those interested in adopting the solar energy system.

The interest rate on the loan was only five per cent under the UN-sponsored programme. The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. offered a concession of 35 paise per unit with a ceiling of 100 units to those who used solar energy, he added. The Assistant Director of Women and Child Welfare, Prabhavathi Karaninga, lauded the women self-help groups for setting up solar units at Honaganahalli and Sawanahalli.
