Training Workshop on Biomonitoring of Wetlands
10th - 12th November 2011
Energy & Wetlands Research Group, Centre for Ecological Science, Indian Institute of Science. Bangalore

Wetlands are defined as lands transitional between terrestrial and aquatic eco-systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water. The value of the world's wetlands is increasingly receiving due attention as they contribute to a healthy environment in many ways. Monitoring of wetlands through bioindicators is gaining popularity across globe and biomonitoring methods prove to be more efficient and cost effective. Though many PhD and Master dissertation work deals with wetland monitoring, very few studies are analyses and interpreted properly. Data collected during this studies are often not analyzed appropriately due to lack of training in taxonomy and unaware of apt statistically analysis.

This training workshop consists of lectures on (1) Basics of biomonitoring, (2) Water quality Assessment, (3) Introductory Phycology, (4) Advanced Phycology, (5) Introduction to Diatoms, (6) Diatom based biomonitoring, (7) Statistics in Biomonitoring and (8) Research Tools. Lectures will also include Skype lectures from world leading phycologists. This course is aimed at College Teachers and Ph.D. students who are about to start Ph.D. thesis work in following areas: (1) Wetlands biodiversity monitoring, (2) Wetlands water quality monitoring, (3) Phytoplankton studies and (4) Wetlands Ecosystem services.

Applicants should fill the online application on or before 20 October 2011. Since the number of seats is limited, preference will be given to students who are in early stage of their Ph.D.  research and college teachers.

Registration fee of Rs: 500/- has to be paid by all the participants. Workshop organizer will provide workshop training reading materials and working lunch. The time of workshop will be 9am to 5pm.
