Abstract : This chapter addresses the issues and problems that relate to managing urban sprawl in India. To do this and to strengthen planning and decision making, it is necessary to consider information systems, models and policies. This chapter presents the design and prototype of a planning support system (PSS) built for Bangalore City. The essential steps to strengthen policy, planning and decision making are outlined and gaps have been identified based on the experiences with the City Corporation in Bangalore. Rather than revisiting the modelling approaches, the chapter addresses the user requirements of a PSS, emphasising its utility along with the challenges and limitations of this system as an effective tool for policy, planning and decision making.
