Saw scaled Viper & Russell's Viper

Saw scaled viper (Echis carinatus) and Russell's viper (Daboia russelii): dangerous duo

Both of these snakes are VENOMOUS. We have only caught the Saw-scaled viper on our campus. The Russell's viper was not previously recorded but there was a report of a recent sighting on campus.

Both of these snakes can be identified by the small scales on their triangular heads, compared with the larger scales (head-shields) on the heads of other snakes. Another thing to look for is the bold and distinctive diamond pattern found on the bodies of both these snakes.

The Saw-scaled viper in southern India grows to a maximum of 2 ft. The Russells viper is larger and can grow upto 4 ft in length.
